Superb September

ok I have the most annoying bug bite on my foot. it itches like crazy,
and then it swells and when I walk it feels like I am walking on one
of sheets of bubble wrap. trying to pop it. anyways.. gotta love the
Midwest.

ok, this week has been a real rollercoaster, SO STRESSFUL but so much
fun. And it is all so worth it. now that it is over I am so grateful
for it, and I learned a lot about myself, how to work with others,
being humble, working hard, how to communicate better and be a
peacemaker and the list goes on...

I don't remember if I told you about Shaun and Tarus and their family
or not, but we found her as we were walking to our car one night, and
she and her family were a sincere answer to my prayers. I have been
praying we would be able to find and teach a family and get them into
the gospel. this ward needs more families to support the ward.
anyways, we taught them twice this week, they were both really
excellent lessons. Carmella (9 yr old) is so close to the spirit, she
was so happy when she heard about the plan of salvation, and at the
end of our lesson we sang them "Child of God" and she just started to
cry. and Shaun kept saying I need to get my family here, my mom needs
to hear this.  The spirit was strong./
then at our next lesson Tarus (her boyfriend/fiancée) was so engaged
and they all are just so interested and wanting to learn and change.
it is awesome! they had good questions like how do you know a prophet
when they say they are a prophet? and we served them by helping them
put away their groceries. ( the profiles are correct, all black people
love fried chicken, and they are proud of it.) haha so we put away a
LOt of chicken. we taught them about the power of fasting and invited
them to join us on sunday.  they agreed and we floated out of that
lesson, and was so grateful for those experiences.. AWESOME!!

Tuesday was transfers.. so we didn't have as much planned because we
were unsure when we were planning.. anyways. It was a stretching day.
Basically what happened, is that there was a member in our ward
(African American) , who feels offended and is still hurt because of a
mistake my companion made.  Well, lovely Sister Henderson is so sweet,
but can sometimes be very brash and bold and come off as not very
loving, and she knows it, and so she is working on this weakness and
is doing her very best.  Well, we go to this members home and she
thought we were there to resolve things that happened a month ago,
(that I thought had already been resolved) and so she went off on us.
she didn't yell, but her words were not very kind, and there were a
lot of confusing things she brought up. She expressed to us a lot of
her frustrations, and after pondering about it I have come to realize
it is a weak spot in her testimony. She pointed everything at us (I am
sure it is because we are an easy target as missionaries) - that all
the weight of her problems was because of what WE had done, when in
reality it is because she doesn't understand and is somewhat hard
hearted. her pointing things at us didn't help sister Henderson feel
any better about her self with her self confidence and anxieties, and
so she became defensive. Needless to say, CONTENTION was present...
and I just sat there as they went back and forth, with everything to
Joseph Smith, to the infamous "blacks and the priesthood" to "why
don't you preach Jesus Christ?!"  and everything in between. I
immediately pulled out the Book of Mormon and held it in my hands just
for the strength and power that come from it,.. it is like a security
blanket for me now.. haha seriously.  I played mediator, and felt like
a judge in a court room, saying "its her turn to talk," "ok now its
her turn to talk" finally I just gave up. I had been praying the whole
time the lord would tell me and lead me what to do, and so I just sat
there in silence as they bickered. finally I had had enough, so I
opened the Book of Mormon to a random page and just started reading.
just happened to be  Mosiah 2:9-12 and then I skipped to 15-17.  The
spirit I know quieted them, it flooded the room, and taught them each.
I closed the book and said a prayer, the scariest part was right in
the middle of the prayer, her son (who was in the other room) yelled
out SUPER LOUD in a deep deep voice the F word, and it made my whole
body jump. it was like a bomb going off. There are so many parallels I
have pulled from this experience.  it was so hard.

then on Wednesaday we taught Jennifer. She lives in the south side,
the DEEP south side, where it is dangerous.. kinda exciting if you ask
me. We have to tell the zone leaders when we are going and when we
leave and we are not supposed to go there after 4:00 and anyways, we
have pretty good lessons with her. she is something else.. just
imagine for a moment a Queen Bee.  In every sense of what a queen bee
is, she is just that to all the men in the neighborhood. hahaha its
crazy!  people on the south side,(at least the ones we have met) are
very nice and respectful to us. they understand who we are as servants
of The Lord, and are grateful for what we do.  Basically everyone
needs the gospel and she has a desire to change. I don't understand
when people know what they are doing is wrong and they still do it, at
least when it is something that severe. I mean we all do that to some
degree... that is why the atonement is so important and so real. she
is not yet making big changes in her life, but it will be by small and
simple steps for her. It has been great because she has introduced us
to a lot of her friends that we have started to teach and referred to
the elders. its great! I will keep you posted on her and the
adventures in the south side.

Two more stories,

Erica is another investigator we really started to teach this week.
She has quite the past as well. She served 3 years in jail because she
shot a man 5 times and then gave him CPR to keep him alive. He was
breaking into her house and did some other things that I don't need to
mention, so she shot him.... 5 times, she has had a really rough Life
and I am grateful I am not responsible for judging her and all that.
But we had some great lessons, she loves the Book of Mormon and loves
learning with us. We read Enos with her and she identified with his
words, and testified that she knew it was true. She came to church
with us and loved it, participated in class and loved meeting new
people. It was such a good Sunday for her.

Sunday was extremely stressful, Erica was great and taken care of, but
it was Shaun, during sacrament she was talking loudly, and I know
people we looking at her, because they were probably wondering who it
was. she wandered the halls saying she felt a spirit of the devil
there because she felt unwelcome and judged. That people just stared
at her, and didn't say hello.  Her husband loved church and loved the
spirit and kept saying "she will come around."  Anyways she ended up
sitting in the hall and wandering down to the nursery where one of her
daughters was, and the leaders asked her to leave, anyways it was just
super overwhelming and all Sunday I was praying in my heart things
would work out, and sometimes i felt the weight of the world that
everything depended on me, then Those thoughts from the adversary
creeped in and I feared the members would think less of us because we
broth this "crazy lady" to church. Sister Henderson and Shaun got into
a disagreement, so I was the middle man again, and had to resolve
things, and honestly the entire 3 hour block I was on the brink of
tears, faithful everything would workout, but stressed and frustrated
but I didn't want anyone to know I was about to break down because
sister Henderson was already crying. So I silently struggled, until
sister Wynn ( one of my favorite people ever) just gave me a hug, and
I broke down and she just gave me the best motherly hug ever. I was so
grateful, and just an exemplary act of Christlike service, I am so
grateful, makes me cry just thinking about it... Anyways, that was
deep, I usually don't share those things with you, but that was a
really hard day. And as I said before I learned so much and I am so
grateful for it. I have learned a lot about African American culture
and their temperaments and a little insight to their perspective and
trials they face as  blacks in America. I hope that very trial I face
I can face the way I faced this one, while the whole experience was
hard and I don't desire for myself or others, I felt so loved and
strengthened through the whole thing, I really felt the spirit with
me, and a calmness, even when I was faced with the very worst fears
and anxieties. I am grateful for the atonement and that it covers
everything we go through. The Lord loves me. I know it. I know he is
mindful of me and cares deeply and is always there to help us deal
with others and show them love even when it is hard.  And I know the
same is true for each of you. I love being a missionary. I am grateful
that I am on a mission today, in the service of the lord. 78 "todays"
left. I am going to make them count and just enjoy the moment.

This church is true, don't forget it, and do all you can to nurture
your testimonies of Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.

Love you all,
Sister O'Neil

I am so excited! This week we have women's conference and zone
training and just so much good stuff!

We held a lot of animals this week and did a lot of service.  Mowing
the lawn, painting, etcetera. I sent pictures. :)

Hope all that makes sense. Let me know if you need clarification. Have
a great week!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICOLE!  Hope you have a wonderful day! Love you a butt ton! :)

“When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.”
Hello my dear family and friends!

This week has been FULL of service! We have been busy and it has just been fun! :)
We helped Sister Linda Johnson clear out some trees and brush in her back yard. Us and both sets of Elders went to help for about 3 hours at her home. It was pretty fun! We mowed and cut and dragged and threw logs and branches. It was awesome to look at everything we accomplished.Lots of hard work, and i was sore the next couple of days, but i was so much fun and so worth it! :)
I have had to remind my self a lot of that doctrine this week.  That even when things are hard and we are sore, they are worth it. because it means we are growing, and being strengthened. simple, yet satisfying...

We also helped sister Millard with her garden. We helped to plant some seeds, she is hoping they will work this late in the season. It was pretty fun. it reminded me of the days that dad and i would plant gardens together and then he would do the rest of the work. hahaha still true sometimes. hahah but funny.  :) so we planted seeds for her to do the rest of the work.

AND THIS WEEK:  tomorrow actually, I am so excited! one of my goals since coming on my mission has been to mow the lawn! I have just been wanting to mow the lawn, i know it seems weird, but i really do miss it.  So.. TOMORROW is the day!! i am so excited! its going to be awesome!

oh, transfers.. I am staying here, and staying with sister Henderson for another transfer. Should be great! i love being here. There are a lot of people that we need to find and teach.
we have been talking to a lot of people this week actually. it has been really cool just to see how we have been placed in the right places at the right times. It feels good to just be talking to everyone about the gospel. We have met with a few of those people and have another appointment tonight with this girl named shaun.  It is exciting. we are just trying to get our teaching pool rebuilt, and get the ball rolling.

We are still working with Linda and Patricia. THey are doing well, linda received a calling and we are working to help Patricia get to Nauvoo!  woot!

We had dinner with Maribel this week, she is a recent convert in this ward, and from Mexico. she fed us so much good food! I felt like i was at Tacos Manuel. It was delish! but as in that culture, right as i was filling extrmely full, she pulled out more food for us to eat.. i about died. we didnt eat the next day. haha

We had a really fun activity with the relief society this week. they had "learn a new skill" night. It was really fun to be there and talked to a few non-members who came. It was great to see members invite their freinds to church activities. So we had some good conversations with them.

Moments of darkness and depression or fear and pain, are some of the worst. some of the pains and worries we have can seem to great to handle. That we are not up for the job, or that they are too overwhelming. That frustrations will never leave and we don't know how to do things differently to resolve problems. i have loved looking at this quote from Harold B. Lee " happiness does not depend on what happens outside of you, but on what happens inside of you; it is measured by the spirit with which you meet the problems of life."

I know Heavenly Father is mindful of us and that he loves us. I know that He is aware of us on a very personal level. and loves us. trust in the lord. That is all he asks of us. even when he requires that we do things that are hard. I know it is a growing experience and i know we are blessed as we do all that we can to follow the trusting advice and direction he gives to us. and it will become easier to meet the problems of life with that happy attitude.

I love the book of mormon. I know its power is real. and I love the feeling i get every time i read.

ok, love you all!
hope to hear from you soon!

love,
Sister O'Neil

First Day of Summer
Today it is SO HOT!! it finally feels like summer.
so far it has been very mild, nice and enjoyable. so it feels weird to finally have summer, now that the kids are back in school.

roaches and fleas and spiders and floods, OH MY!!   yes we experienced all of those this week. our apartment is SO GHETTO and I feel like it just gets worse.. Every time it rains we get water on our carpet and well it rained a TON this week. so we now have a big fan under our carpet to dry it and the manager is giving the church a discount on the rent.  serves em right! this flood issue is like the 6th time this has happened since I have been here, and it was happening before I got here. Hope they get it figured out soon...
The fleas, I don't know how much we really have fleas.. I have not been bitten or anything by them. I have seen one, sister Henderson has seen 5.  soo.. we got some stuff and haven't seen any since..
We were talking about it one day and I told sister Henderson that I had always, in some ways, looked forward to eating gross things, and living in sketchy places with dirt floors etc. on my mission. for the adventure side of things!  And then when I was called here, I didn't think I would have any problems.. Well this has been an adventure.. for sure. I think sometimes the hardest part is just trying to stay positive about it all. And yet all at the same time, I really don't care.. haha has horrible as that sounds. I guess I figure my complaining and making  a stink out of things isn't going to change things, so why complain. why make it worse?

This week we have been trying to rebuild our teaching pool. sometimes it is really hard because we just baptized so many, and the people we are not baptizing are not really progressing, so we have to do a lot of finding to make up. It is exciting. It feels good.
something I have been pondering and learning about it the importance of specific prayers. "you don't pray, you don't get answers." -P.fenn.  We have been learning a lot about it from President Fenn.  He actually gave us 10 steps about "spiritual decision making" at the last zone training meeting this week and  I want to share them with you and I hope you will study them.
1. Worthiness is a prerequisite to having the ability to make decisions by the spirit.  - D&C 121:45; 50:29-30
2. Ask questions - in prayer (pray in specifics)
-2 nephi 32:8; 32:4 -D&C 42:14; 46:30   He emphasized the importance of praying in specifics because the Devil will teach us to pray generically or not at all, and then most of the time we become repetitious, asking for the same things.  "the time you feel the least like praying is when we should pray the most." - Brigham young.
ask, seek, knock.  Knocking is action, aksing is prayer and seeking is study.
3. ask the right question- things that matter most VS the trivial. -D&C 8:10; 88:65 - "it mattereth not unto me": D&C 60:5; 61:22; 62:5.
then president taught us so much about the story of the Brother of Jared! (oh ok I love ETHER!)  ok so he read to us Ether 2:19-25 and then commented on how he thought between the two things they needed - air and light - air was the easier one to figure out. (think about it... cut a hole.. kinda common sense..)  but then if you look at verse 23 the lord pretty much tells the borther of Jared "go study your scriptures." if you follow the foot note on the word Windows it goes to Genesis 6:16.  There it talks about "tsohar" which means a precious stone.  The brother of Jared had to study his scriptures to know the answer to his prayers and learn from the example of others how to get through his trials. - pretty cool. Noah figured it out and helped the Bro of Jared.  ( the church is so true.. that is all.. :) )
4. The holy Ghost teaches us what to pray for (scripture study = spiritual environment)  -romans 8:26 - 2 nephi 32:3 - 3 nephi 19:24   Basically, it is really cool.. we can receive revelation when we pray and we can FEEL the answers to our prayers.
5. Make a decision and ask for confirmation.
- reason and study precede revelation... I love this part about how to know what we are receiving comes from God. ( I think it is a question many people ask, and we will continue to ask, but we have a check and balance system given to us by the lord)
confirm our revelation ask ourselves:
 - is this consistent with the scriptures?
 - Is this consistent with the prophets?
 - is this consistent with rational thought?
 - is this under my stewardship?
-D&C 9:7-9; 8:2-3
Spiritual decision making encompasses both our heart and mind. remember prayer is a form of work (as defined in the Bible dictionary)
Also there is a difference between no answer from the lord and the answer no. (look to step 9)
and we cannot receive revelation outside of our stewardship: - ourselves, our families (if we are mother or father) and our calling.
6. Listen to the spirit - feel the spirit in your mind and heart.
the adversary does not want us to believe we are led by the spirit, or that we have that gift that will work as we are worthy.
D&C 6:15 ; 8:2-3 1 nephi 15:8, 3 nephi 9:20, 1 nephi 17:45 1 kings 19- it is more felt than heard.
"when your heart tells you something you mind didn't know, I call that enlightenment" - President Fenn
7. Failure to act causes a withdrawal of the spirit (FEAR) D&C 9:11  we are not entitled to multiple revelations about the same subject. Elder Holland calls that analysis paralysis.
don't give counsel to our fears. and remember past revelations.
8. Call to remembrance past revelations to strengthen you
-"cast not away therefore your confidence" - Hebrews 10:32,35 - D&C 88:67-68
9. move forward with faith when no clear answer comes: -ether 12:6 - Isaiah 55 - D&C 88:67-68
the answer no= a stupor of thought. and no answer is when we have to move forward- we shall receive no witness until after the trail of our faith.
10. the lord will protect you when you have followed the proper course: 3 nephi 9:20
do we trust the lord?  do we have confidence in him?  sometimes the knowledge that god loves us has to be enough to get us through. It needs to be enough.

"Let the holy Spirit guide, let him teach us what is true,
he will testify of Christ, light our minds with heavens view." -hymn 143

I loved learning about this. I hope you will find it useful in your life decisions you have to make and in your callings and just in increasing our faith and trust in the lord. I have been praying that I might use this more specifically in my life and with the work I have at hand.

HAVE YOU SEEN ELDER BEDNARS TALK?!!! Mom and dad: were you there?  If you have not, go and watch it. it is amazing!!  #sharegoodness!!  - will you each make a post this week on your facebook and use the hash tag?  I will be looking for your posts people!! and I am going to follow up with you next week, but seriously,. it is an amazing talk. and I hope we can each do better at sharing the goodness in this world. also I am SO excited about  "meet the Mormons!" OCTOBER 10th!! yeah!!

ok so as I said last week I had to give a talk on sunday. I prepared so much for it. I was so worried about it and just wanted the spirit to be there. sister Henderson kept saying: " I have never seen anyone prepare this much for a talk"  haha well I just have come to really know that I have to have every word written out. or I sound like a baboon when I get up there. anyways, I was so nervous - have not been that nervous in a LONG time. I was more nervous than when I get up to sing somewhere. My heart was racing, I felt like I was having a heart attack or something. my hands were so clammy and cold and I just felt sick. It was not an exciting feeling. anyways, I feel that I felt of the spirit. I knew heavenly father had helped me in preparing for it.
A lot of members of the ward were so kind and told me what a wonderful job I had done. it meant a lot to me, and I was grateful for all they said. I hope the learned from the things I shared with them and the spirit touched their hearts.

well here is to another week as a missionary!! :)  It is pretty great!  transfer calls are this Saturday. I cant believe another 6 weeks has passed. CrAzY!!
Anyways! I love you all!
hope you have a great week! and stay true!
Jesus is the Christ, Joseph Smith is a prophet and the church is true!!!

love,
Sister Jenny O'Neil

Knowing What I Know Now

Hello my lovely family!

Another week older and wiser too.  Happy P-DAY to you!

BUT Happy Birthday to ELIZA!!! yay baby!!  AND..

Happy 40 years mom and dad!! congratulations!! That is quite an accomplishment. Thank you for your excellent example to me and many others of true love.  Thank you for living Christ-centered lives that are coupled with covenants and serving the Lord! I love you both!  Thank you for all you have taught me and the wonderful life you have helped to provide me with. ( now I would hold up my glass of sparkling cider and say "here's to eternity!" :) )  haha  I love you! hope you have a wonderful day together.

Well the fab 3 weekends are over. All three of our baptisms happened! and all three went very well. It was such a wonderful feeling to be there to witness their baptisms. It was awesome!

Kaitlyn's baptism went well!  Their family was there and a lot of people from the ward came to support their family. It was wonderful.  I noticed that every baptism became much easier to set up for and execute as we became more experienced. It was interesting how much I learned and the knowledge I gained as we worked on these baptisms. Following the baptism was the ward party in Chillicothe and they came and stayed the whole time. They talked with so many other members and it was great! I am so happy for them!! :) The ward party was great. it was at this place called shore acres and it was right on the bank of the Illinois River. It was such a beautiful spot. and I loved being there and enjoying the time with the members.  I told brother Gappmayer ( who was cooking the hamburgers and Hotdogs) all about dads fancy trick to put the burgers in water. he was so amazed and said he is going to do that next time. :)  **dads a pretty smart guy... just sayin... ***

This week we received a referral from a member, she had met this lady at the park and just started talking to her about the gospel.  she was interested so sister Claghorn asked for her number and we called her and scheduled a time to meet with her.  Her name is Erica, and when we went for our appointment she wasn't there and we met her daughter, Miracle (that's her name). and was it a miracle!  we taught her the restoration and she loved it! she understood so much of it as well.  and then we went back to see her on Saturday and she wasn't there but her mom was, so we met both of them! it was great! one referral and two new investigators!! :)  pretty awesome! so don't be afraid to be a missionary!! look, now there are two more people learning about Christ because of Sister Claghorns small invite. SO GREAT!! and she really didn't go out of her way...

We are working hard with our recent converts and trying to find more people to teach. it is always a work in progress, but a great work.  I love reading the book of Mormon. I recently restarted and I am trying to read the whole thing in 65 days. no more no less..  It is really awesome. I have been highlighting the topic of "knowledge" and just everything to do with it. it is so enlightening. I love it.
We have zone training meeting this week. I am looking forward to that and learning lots. I am also looking forward to exchanges, we always see so many miracles while we are on exchanges.  And it is just going to be a great week!
I hope all of you are enjoying your kids being in school (or starting soon)  Hope they are loving it! I would love to see back to school pictures! ;)

I love being a missionary.  I love serving here. I love our Savior. I love learning. I love The book of Mormon. I love the Prophet Joseph Smith.

love you!
Sister O'Neil

** p.s.  I have been asked to give a 5 minute talk next week on "the power of the book of Mormon"  I have no idea where to begin.  If you were to give that talk what would you focus on and why?    I would really REALLY appreciate feed back!   love you!

8/11/14

I love serving in Peoria! it really is like the land of milk and honey.

This week has been great. it obviously started out well, by our attendance at the Nauvoo temple!
And it just got better from there.  We did a lot of service this week, we helped Linda (who was baptized last week) clean her floors, and then we helped a hoarder clean out her basement.  It was all good fun, kinda gross but kinda fun at the same time. remember, cleanliness is next to godliness... that is all.

Patricia's baptism was so wonderful!! During the opening song I just started crying out of happiness.  It was so werid I have never done that before, but I just really love Patricia and I love that the lord has truly prepared her.  She is such a blessing to my life, just that I have had the opportunity to meet her and help teach her. AH! I love it. the lord is so good to us!  Her services were really good! a few people came, but they were gracious and loving and it was just wonderful. Patricia had asked me to sing at her baptism, and I invited sister Henderson to sing with me, It was wonderful. The spirit was so strong as we sang "how great thou art." it was awesome.  My favorite moment of her baptism was right after she was baptized, we waited for her on the side of the font, and she just started to cry, and stood there crying for a minute. she was SO HAPPY and just radiating. AH! that is my favorite moment.
She was so happy, and then on Sunday! well Sunday is a story for itself but I will tell you this part real fast..  Patricia received one of the most beautiful confirmations I have ever heard. It mentioned how there will be many who will follow in her footsteps and that she would have great power to withstand the adversary. AH! so cool!!  anyways right after they said amen I looked over at her, and she raised her hands slightly and just looked up and whispered "thank you Jesus." ahahaha ! it was awesome!! I love her!! I just love the soul and honesty she has! SO COOL!!  love her! she was glowing and just beautiful on Sunday, seeing people right after they have been confirmed is my absolute favorite, they are literally glowing. AH! the church is so true!  I am so grateful for the Priesthood and the Book of Mormon.. everything!

linda received a calling this week! it is awesome!   she is progressing well and she too continues to have her glow! :)  I LOVE RECENT CONVERTS!!!

ok so Sunday was awesome! I was so focused on Patricia all weekend that I kinda forgot about some of the other people so it was SO AWESOME when we saw that not one not two BUT FOUR investigators came to church!! Ashley Clake came, and The Merrys and Kaitlyn (which we weren't sure about)   It was awesome!!  and we were just so busy trying to help everyone. and some less actives came that we have been working with, who we were not expecting. It was just so great!! I LOVE when people come to church. it is the best!! :) SERIOUSLY..  And the sacrament meeting was just superb and the talks and lessons were PERFECT!!  I LOVE CHURCH!

We are still working with the Perplies to see if Kaitlyn will be ready for baptism this Saturday. It is a sticky situation with her parents not being fully active. so I will keep you all posted. :)

this up coming week should be super fun!! we are going to have a ward party and some new investigators!! love you all!

8/4/14
Good morning family,

I am currently enroute to the lovely Nauvoo temple, and I am beyond
excited. I feel it a privilege to have this opportunity. I feel it
such a blessing to 1. Have a temple on the earth and 2. To have this
opportunity to go to the Nauvoo temple this day. A childhood dream
fulfilled today. ( don't know if I ever told you, but ever since the
dedication I have wanted to go to this temple. Yay! We are headed to
the 9:00 session.. :)

***since I started writing this I have been to Nauvoo and attended the
session.***
I loved being in Nauvoo. All the memories from my youth and experience
in Nauvoo for EFY came flooding back. I loved it. Most of all I loved
the spirit. I think the Nauvoo temple is now my favorite. There was
such a closeness that I felt to the prophet Joseph Smith, and an
undeniable testimony was given to me, for which I am grateful for. I
am grateful for prophets and apostles and for our savior Jesus Christ,
and His Father, our Heavenly Father. They love us so much. I feel of
their love. GO TO THE TEMPLE, YOU WONT REGRET IT.

After our session, the temple workers were kind enough to take us down
to the baptistery and we saw some youth waiting down there, and
finishing some work, and I just reflected on how grateful i was for
the many times I attended the temple as a youth. There is such a
special and different spirit in the baptistery that truly prepares one
for the ordinances and covenants that we enter into during the
endowment session.  I am so grateful for all the preparation I had in
my life. I am grateful for the blessings of the temple. I am grateful
for the ways in which The Lord prepares us for the future. To my
friends and family preparing for the future: go to the temple, as
often as you can, you won't regret it.

So that being said, I am typing on my iPad so if there are typos, sorry...

Do your remember that story I told you about when sister bailey and I
dropped the phone into the storm drain? Well... This week I came to
discover the real purpose for that event happening. At the time, in
the heat of the moment, I become worried and yelled out "who are we
going to call?!" Well those few moments of stress and hilarity
prepared me for the things that happened this week.  On Monday after
emailing home, we went to the store, and ran some other errands, went
to a dinner appointment and then.. We discovered... We left our phone
in the library.... Seems like it was no big deal right?!..... WRONG!..
We tried to go and get it, but by the time we could make it there, it
was closed, there on the door it said. " closed Tuesdays" we went the
entire day on Tuesday with no phone, no way to contact our
investigators, no way to talk to our leaders..  It was crazy, that
night ( on Monday) we went to a members home and made some calls. Well
it was really funny because  we went to the Jeffs home, and president
Jeffs is a member of the stake presidency, so it was really fun to
call members on their phone and trick them. Some of them answered so
seriously. It was hilarious.. Haha the Jeffs even had the idea for me
to make more calls just to be funny.. :)  ( haha love that fam.)
The story gets better... On Tuesdays we give the car to the elders..
So we had no car and no phone for a full day. And it was insane! We
had so many appointments that day and we were running late to all of
them. Our last appointment we never had the chance to confirm, it was
with Patricia, so I just net on faith that Heavenly Father knew our
plans and desires to teach her that night, and so when we went to her
home, and just showed up, she was there!! And we had an awesome lesson
with her. It was the best.  I know The Lord had prepared me for this,
and it felt more capable. Every time I thought about our predicament
on Monday and Tuesday I just started laughing. I thought it was the
funniest thing because there was nothing we could do. So I just
laughed. It was awesome. I brought me so much joy.

I know it to be true, that the weeks that are the most hectic, end In
the most peaceful ways. This weekend was Linda's baptism. It was such
a wonderful  program. I felt like a chicken with its head cut off, all
leading up to it, there we so many things to do,but we got them all
figured out.  It was a miracle Linda made it to the church: sister
Henderson and I were waiting for her. So we look out the window and
see that she is here, so naturally we go out to greet her, and as we
are walking out she starts to drive away. I had the phone in my hand,
and she called us, and then first thing I said was "where are you
going?! Don't go! Just come inside!" - I thought she was making a run
for it, and didn't want to be baptized because the first thing she
said to me was " I gotta go home."  She had forgot her white clothes
and things at home, so she had to drive the 20 minute back to
Chillicothe and the 20 minute drive back. AND she said that her gas
tank was on 0. So she was nervous she wouldn't make it, but she did,
we just started 30 minutes late.  It was such a nice service, the
spirit was strong and her family came! :) she said right after she was
baptized "I never thought the day would come." I am so happy for
Linda. She has been wanting to be baptized for so long, And they day
came! So great! - grateful I could be a part of that.  Sister Emily
Ross and I sang " teach me to walk in the light" for her baptism, and
Elder turner accompanied us. It was great!

Sunday was a great day! I am so grateful for fast and testimony
meetings.  Sometimes you worry about the testimony meetings in certain
wards... Because ya know,. There are just some of those children of
god who love to share their whole life story, nonetheless, it was a
great Sunday. And GUESS WHAT!!?? PATRICIA BORE HER TESTIMONY!! It was
wonderful. She just went on up there and invited the whole ward to
come to her baptism next week. I feel like I was in disbelief the
whole time she was up there. It was a great testimony and she even
invited others to follow Christ by saying " if he is showing you the
signs, don't ignore them, follow them" she is such an amazing
individual. I love her so much. She passed her interview on Saturday
and is ready to go for Saturday the 9th! I am so excited, I love her.
She is probably one of my favorite people ever. And she was prepared
for the gospel and the gospel message.

HELLO MHA FAM BAM!!

oh, how I love thee!!
first things first #happybirthdayeric  #4monthsandcounting #bittersweet
second:   the rumors are true! I AM GOING TO NAUVOO!! WOOT!! I could not be more excited and honored and just blessed! It has been 4 years since I have been to that beautiful place, and I am so excited to go back, and to attend the temple! I remember when I went there for EFY the temple president at the time was very kind in allowing us to walk up the spiral stair case when we had finished in the baptistery and I remember looking up those stairs and having the overwhelming desire to go up. and to be a part of whatever was going on. I just love that temple. It has such a wonderful place in my heart.  I feel so close to the prophet Joseph Smith as I have served out here and I just feel so blessed to be going there next week! So we may not have as much time to email next week, but I will do my best to send a lil somthin your way! :)

I hope your week(s) have been beautiful and you have learned lots!

Well this weekend - coming up- will be the beginning of the best three weeks of my mission! I am not kidding you! I will be at the church every Saturday.. filling the FONT!! YES!! This is like the dream month of all months for a missionary, and I just feel so blessed and privileged that the lord has blessed me with these people to teach and help in their journey home to Him.   This work is so true!

This week has been a stretching week, and I feel that I will continue to be stretched for the next few weeks. transfers and new companions are always an adjustment. This week I have truly felt the lord stretch me and increase my capacities as I have worked out and organized things this week.  I just feel such importance has been placed on all things, and I am so grateful to be here in this area, and to be working with these great people. We have had so many wonderful spiritual lessons, and uplifting moments. I just feel so happy to be here, and undistracted. It is a great blessing at this time. :)
Sister Henderson and I are doing great! she is so sweet and kind, and soft spoken. she has many struggles - like any of us. and so I feel that we are going to work great together, and help one another. I hope she can work through some trials she is facing as we are together.  I have felt prepared and a comfort from the lord as we have begun this transfer together. It will all be ok in the end! :)  I love being a missionary.

some funnies:  I don't know if I have told you or not, but there are a TON of  black people in Peoria. they are just about my favorite people. anyways, Sister Sheila King is in our ward and she has a couple of grandkids that are always with her (she is raising them) the other day Kenzie,  a little boy, who just turned 7 and is black, was talking to us at the church while we were there to do our online proselyting. I was asking him questions like "how old are you?" what is your favorite color etc etc.  and then I asked " what do you want to be when you grow up?" and he just said "black"  hahahaha sister Henderson and I just started laughing SO hard!! hahaha - that dream wont be hard for him to accomplish. haha he is the best.

We taught Janea and Jamal Brown this week, they are sister Lakita's grandkids, they were in town for just one week, and they wanted to start the lessons so we taught them. They are 10 year old twins, and we asked them why they wanted to be members of the church and their answers were so tender: Janea said " I want to go to the temple to do the work for my mom" and Jamal said "  I want to be a missionary. because they have a curfew and that would be good for me" It was so awesome! :)

Patricia is AMAZING!! Family, I hope you have the opportunity to meet her someday. she is about as golden as an investigator could come. This week she shared with us that she has been facing some opposition from Satan.  In her mind she would get the thoughts that she doesn't need to be baptized and if she became a part of the Mormons others would think she is weird,  that she doesn't need the "label" and the label would hurt her more than help her.  She said she pondered this for a while, she always says "the lord came to me", but the spirit prompted her that she should not give up, and  she said "the lord put into my mind one word: covenant"  she said she remembered when we had talked about it but she didn't know much about it and then as she was doing homework later, she was typing something and the word "covenant" came up on her computer again. Then she said as she sat in sacrament meeting her prayers and questions were answered. the youth speaker on Sunday talked about covenants.  It was a very simple and profound talk that just helped me to understand them better, and answered her questions.  Patricia, then bore her testimony that she knows this is what God needs her to do, to make these covenants with him by someone who holds the authority and not to worry about the label "Mormon."  it was so powerful and such a blessing to be there.  I had the opportunity to sit next to her on Sunday and all during that talk she kept looking over at me and smiling and nodding her head. I knew the spirit was there and was teaching her, just as it did me. I love Patricia! She is the best! She is so prepared and I just feel so blessed, privileged and honored to have been entrusted with her. I have come to learn so much from her, and about the way our Heavenly Father feels towards all his children- at least in a brighter light. I just have felt very grateful for the things we have been taught at our recent conferences and meetings, because I have really strength from the lord as we have applied these things. I have also felt a greater amount of my trust that I have placed in The Lord, and the blessings that have come from that.  I love this work. I love having these growing- stretching experiences and would not want to trade them for anything.  Patricia has so much faith and just does what she knows is right, with out hesitation. I remember in one of our first lessons she was kind of hesitant and kept saying "I just need to know this is what I am supposed to do."  and I just kindly, and boldly said to her " I am going to be bold here, I think you know this is what you are supposed to do."  Ever since then she has been non-stop faithful and true.  She is going to a strong member of The Lords church. I can feel it.

Linda is preparing for baptism this Saturday! WOOT!! pray for her that she is strengthened from the attacks of the adversary. we are hoping she can come with us on Monday to go to the temple, and work in the baptistery for the hours we are upstairs. I think it would be a wonderful experience for her. And I hope we will work it out so that she can come. It would be the weekend of all weekends for her; baptism sat. confirmed sun temple mon.!woot!! sounds good to me!!

Remind me when I get home to show you the coolest way to teach about the restoration!! I just learned it on Saturday! it is so cool! I cant really explain it to you, so you will just have to remind me!  it has to do with one piece of paper and a story of some missionaries on an island. - maybe you have heard about it. but if you haven't.. be prepared to have your mind blown! like mine was...soo cool!

well time to go! love you all!
read those scriptures. say those prayers and get to church. then Satan cant throw as big of monkey wrenches in your programs. :)
Enjoy Colorado for me- mom and dad. - hug all the little ones.

love you!

7/21/14

Another 6 weeks have come and gone... No words.. that is all. :/

I am truly sad to say that Sister Bailey will be leaving. I have LOVED serving with her. Sure there were hard times and it was an emotional rollercoaster, but which companion isint?  We have had SO much fun, and we have worked SO hard and I am just sad for this companionship to be broken up.  I am grateful for the time we had to serve together, and the things we learned as we placed our trust in the Lord. And I know the lord is in charge, what ever he says goes..

Together, Sister Bailey and I received so much revelation this week. it was incredible and such a blessing, because as we reminded ourselves to call upon the Lord for help, we did receive that help. and we have seen so many people progress because of it.

We currently have 3 people on date to be baptized, the first three Saturdays in August will be busy! that is for sure! Linda is preparing for the 2nd.  Patricia is preparing for the 9th, and Kaitlyn is preparing for the 16th! WOOT! it is SO exciting!! I am SO happy for them all.

Something really funny happened this week, HAHAH it makes me laugh out loud just to think about it... hahaha
So sister Bailey had a dentist appointment and we had just enough time to stop by our apartment for her to run in brush her teeth and then get in the car and go.  So I decided to park the car on the street in the cauldasack ( I have NO idea how to spell that)  we live on.  well there is a storm drain near where I wanted to park, and I thought to myself "you should not park by the storm drain because the roads near the drains are always rough, and I didn't want to hurt the car or something"....( it made sense in my head.) so instead of stopping before the drain, I pulled past it so the drain was near the side of the car.. anyways, sister bailey gets out of the car and I hear the phone drop.  Thinking it was just on the road, and no big deal I look over at sister bailey and she just says "SISTER!! its down there!!"  almost confused and not really processing everything yet I said "what is?" sister bailey almost in tears "THE PHONE!!"   The phone had fallen down into the storm drain and all three pieces had come apart, meaning the phone, battery, and back of the phone.  oh it was so funny. I just started laughing, mainly because I didn't know what to do immediately.  so sister bailey and I just look down there and are thinking, what are we going to do?  we need that, It is EVERYTHING.. (not really,.. but it is very important)  ok.. here is the funniest part.. We are sitting there and sister Bailey goes, "well, what are we going to do?"  and I just WITH OUT THINKING ---obviously-- I say "I DONT KNOW! WHO ARE WE GOING TO CALL!?!??"  hahahahah! we about died.. I just laughed so much. It was just a blonde moment, and just made our day! haha :) SO! the miracle of it all, was our kind neighbor, that we have just been friendly to, he is visiting his son with his wife here from Bagdad, and they are the kindest people. We asked him to help us, and he got a ziplock and put some string through it and then we scooted the phone and battery into the bag and hoisted it up. it was genius!  and our phone works great! we were worried it had water damage, but it didn't! it was the best! :) such a funny time. OH and we made it in time for her dentist appointment. The Lord is watching out! and just provided a REALLY funny memory.  He must love us or something?! WE ARE SO LUCKY!! :) haha

Patricia is the most prepared investigator I have ever taught. She continues to amaze me!
We taught her about the word of wisdom this week, and she is pretty much already living it. we talked to her about coffee, and she goes " oh! no, Cant have it. it makes me sick."  then we moved to smoking " Never Smoked in my life." alcolhol? " 2 times a year, and now that aint happening."  It WAS Amazing!!  just everything was like boom boom boom! living it. done. so prepared!

I love Patricia because she will always answer our questions and then she expands on her answer and explains to us how she has been prepared.  This week we also taught her the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It was the coolest experience. After we taught her the process and steps of repentance she told us of the spiritual confirmations she had received.  2 weeks before sister Bailey asked Patricia if she needed help (which is how this all got started) she felt the spirit touch her heart and she heard the words " a new beginning"  and so as she was pondering this one day she was sitting at her desk just doodling, and Hanna (her daughter) was sitting next to her, and she wanted to know HOW she would receive this new beginning. she said "the lord showed me an analogy, he showed me a hospital room and they were prepping for open heart surgery. And as they she was shown the steps of the surgery, the lord used phrases and words that sister bailey had used as we were teaching her the steps of repentance. and as she was listening to us, I could just see the light bulbs go off, it was amazing!  SHE KNOWS this is true. SHE HAS A SINCERE HEART! the lord is teaching her and preparing her! it is amazing. I feel so blessed to be a part of this story, and that the lord has entrusted us with her. I love her so much! Hope that makes sense.. but it was amazing. the spirit was SO strong in that lesson.

My new companion is sister Hendersen. I don't know much about her, but I am ready to work hard! I am excited!

love you all! I know the gospel is true. I know the lord gives us the things we need when we need them, and he desires for us to pray for revelation. he will give it to us. :) "go forward be faithful, the promise is sure" "ask and ye shall receive." :)

love,
Sister O'Neil
